Health Savings Account (HSA) 101

What happens to my Health Savings Account (HSA) if I leave my current employer?

If you leave your current employer, you are still the owner of your HSA, so your account stays available to you even after termination.

Now, keep in mind that the IRS establishes certain eligibility criteria to open and maintain an HSA. For instance, if you are no longer enrolled in a high-deductible health plan after leaving your current employer, you won’t be able to elect any more funds to your HSA, but you should still be able to make withdrawals for qualified medical expenses.
